The Kranj-based Presernovo gledalisce Kranj will showcase eleven Slovenian plays as part of the Week of Slovenian Drama. The 37th annual theatre festival will see six plays competing for the Seligo Award for the best play, while five will be vying for the Grum Award for the best Slovenian theatre text.
The festival will take place between 16 March and 1 April, when the closing ceremony will confer the awards to the best plays.
The plays shortlisted for the main award are chamber comedy opera "Mnemosyne" by Iztok Lavric, comedy/melodrama "Prihodnje odhodnje" (Comings Goings) by Srecko Fiser and a remake of the 1696 avant garde play "Pupilija, papa Pupilo pa Pupilcki" (Pupilija, Papa Pupilo and the Little Pupilos), directed by Emil Hrvatin.
The other three shows vying for the Seligo Award include philosophical drama "Zabe" (Frogs) by Gregor Strnisa, teenage drama "To ti je lajf" (Some Life This Is) by Tina Kosi and the socially engaged black comedy Razred (Class) by Matjaz Zupancic, last year's winner of the Grum Award.
This year's Grum Award could meanwhile go to "Dom" (Home) by Sasa Rakef, "Pejd mal vn" (Go Out for a Sec') by Zoran Hocevar, "Lep dan za umret" (A Good Day to Die) by Matjaz Kalan, "Zrelo" (Jaws) by Zanina Mircevska and "Za nase male dame" (For Our Little Ladies) by Dragica Potocnjak.
The fringe programme will focus on the stance of rebellious man. They include the sound performance "Bruto" (Gross) by Tomaz Grom, the love story "Spopad s pomladjo" (Encounter with Spring) by Boris Pahor and the experimental project "Zadnja egoisticna predstava" (The Last Egoistic Show) by Mare Bulc.
Apart from these shows, the poetic tragedy "Grmace" (Rocky Peak), a Slovenian-Croatian co-production, will also compete for the audience's award.
