Andrej Jerman Wins World Cup Downhill

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, 23-24 February

Slovenian Andrej Jerman surprisingly won Friday's World Cup downhill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, giving Slovenia the first downhill win in history. This is also the first ski World Cup victory for men since 2000.

The 28-year-old finished in 1 minute, 56.82 seconds, edging Austrian Hans Grugger by 0.22 of a second. Erik Guay of Canada was third in 1:57.26.
"This is sensational," said Jerman, whose previous World Cup best was a fourth place from Bormio in 2006.
"I worked hard for that...This victory is a true reward for everything I've put into my career."
Jerman was lucky to have a low starting number (11), when the course was still holding up in mild weather.
"The course was getting bad and soft, but I had no problems," he said.
Jerman took his second podium place in as many days on Saturday, finishing second in the men's World Cup downhill event in Garmisch Partenkirchen.
This is the best season so far for the Slovenian skier, who is currently third at the downhill rankings. (sta)
