Multicultural Dialogue Group Meets to Give General Guidelines
The Slovenian-sponsored taskforce on intercultural dialogue held its first meeting on the sidelines of an international conference at Jable Castle near Ljubljana on Thursday in what Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel said was part of preparations for Slovenia's stint at the helm of the EU.
Intercultural dialogue is one of the issues Slovenia will be involved with during its presidency in the first half of 2008, said Rupel, specifying the issues of the Middle East, North Africa and the East.
The taskforce is chaired by Abduljalil Sajid, who expressed the hope that the team's work could contribute to the lessening of tensions, also in Kosovo. Imam Sajid is also the chairman of the British Muslim Council for Religious and Racial Harmony.
According to Sajid, the group will mainly deal with challenges that the EU as well as Slovenia will have to face in the future. Rupel added that the group would concentrate on analysis in areas that Slovenia could not cope with by itself. Its work will be related mainly to EU documents.
The group met on the sidelines of the conference on interethnic and interfaith relations in Kosovo, which brought together leaders of ethnic and religious groups, representatives from Kosovo, as well as Slovenian and foreign government officials and experts.
