President Urges Dialogue Between Croatia and Slovenia Govts
President Janez Drnovsek believes the governments of Slovenia and Croatia must start serious dialogue. "It is a must that the governments should sit down and start tackling outstanding issues seriously, or else tensions can only escalate," Drnovsek is quoted as saying on the website of his office on Saturday.
The president made the comments at the request of reporters on the sidelines of a panel in Zrece, NE Slovenia. He explained that he had put forward possible solutions to some of the issues in his latest meeting with Croatian President Stipe Mesic.
According to Drnovsek, the pair had agreed Mesic would examine how the Croatian side saw the border issue so that the the presidents could help the two governments and encourage further dialogue. But there are no new developments, Drnovsek said.
Asked why he cancelled a meeting with the Croatian president scheduled for 15 February, Drnovsek said this was not designed as a political meeting. He said he had been asked by Mesic to come to Bjelovar to present his latest book.
Drnovsek would not go along with the idea that Slovenian holidaymakers should turn away from Croatia because of its attitudes towards Slovenia. On the contrary, the president said he would recommend Slovenians to spend their holidays in Croatia.
"I would recommend a holiday in Croatia. I was on the island of Mljet in autumn and I must say it was lovely there," Drnovsek said.
