The Public Administration Ministry concluded a EUR 6.8m deal with US software giant Microsoft at the end of 2006. The three-year contract involves licenses for Microsoft software, the ministry has told STA.
The deal was joined by 123 public administration institutions, including municipalities, social care centres and agencies. According to the ministry, civil servants use some 28,500 computers.
The new deal comes after the previous EUR 6.25m contract, concluded in 2003, ran out at the end of last year.
The ministry also said it currently has no plans to completely migrate to open source software. While several open source solutions, such as the Linux operating system, various firewalls and the Apache web server, are used, civil servants will for now not switch to OpenOffice.org, an open source office suite.
The issues that prevent the use of open source software include costs of training, issues with compatibility with the existing documents and lack of available local help and support, the ministry explained.
