Festival Brings Three Weeks of Comedy to Celje

Celje, 26 January

The home theatre ensemble will lift the curtain on the annual festival of comedy at the Celje theatre house tonight. Running until 18 February, Days of Comedy will feature eight productions in the competition programme.

The selector Tina Kosi, who is also the art director of SLG Celje Theatre, said she tried to select the best of what was put on stage in Slovenia in the past year.
As usual, the audience will select the best comedy, while a jury will select the best actor, actress, director and best overall production.
Tonight, the SLG Celje company will stage "Checkmate", the play that won Vinko Moederndorfer the Precious Pen award for best comedy at last year's festival.
The ensemble won the audience's award then for best comedy for "Move Over, Mrs Markham" by Ray Cooney and John Chapman.
Other shows in the running for the awards include the Koper Theatre production of Joe Orton's "Loot" (directed by Boris Cavazza) and the SNG Drama Ljubljana production of "The Piggy Bank" written by Eugen Labiche and Botho Strauss and directed by Martin Kusej.
The SNG Nova Gorica theatre and the Sezana Cultural Centre will put on Radoslav Zlatan Doric's "How We Loved Comrade Tito" (directed by Marjan Bevk), while the Ljubljana-based MGL theatre will stage James Prideaux's "Housewife".
This and Noel Coward's "Private Lives", which is to be put on by Drama SNG Maribor, were both directed by Zvone Sedelbauer. Presernovo gledalisce Kranj will stage "Blazno resno slavni" (Absolutely Seriously Famous) by Desa Muck, while the ensemble of Spas teater will appear in Ephraim Kishon's "It Was the Lark".
Last year, the Finest Comedy Award went to the Drama SNG Maribor production of Ken Ludwig's "Lend Me a Tenor", directed by Jansa Jamnik, while director Tijana Zinajic was honoured for Robert Farquhar's "Kissing Mr Bean", a production of Mestno gledalisce Ptuj.
