Slovenia woke up on Thursday morning to discover that the entire country was finally covered in snow, the first time this winter. Ski lift operators sighed with relief as snow finally coated Slovenia. According to a website providing information on snow at Slovenian ski resorts the layer of snow is 15-170-cm thick.
Eleven ski resorts that have already been operating were joined by four more, while five ski resorts are expected to start the lifts this weekend.
Finally, the ski season has started, Secretary General of the Slovenian Association of Ski Lift Operators Dusan Bozicnik told STA. All ski resorts that have enough snow are busy preparing the slopes, he added.
The loss that the resorts have generated this winter cannot be covered, however it can be reduced, Bozicnik said. The information about the losses should be known in the middle of next week.
Luka Vrancic of the Krvavec ski resort, which greeted the first skiers on 15 December, told STA that this winter the resort had 30% less visitors compared to the same period last season, since not many people opted for one-day skiing trips.
There is 80 cm of fresh snow at slopes around the Kranjska gora ski resort. Klavdija Gomboc of the Kranjska gora ski lift operators told STA ski lifts at Kranjska gora, Podkoren, Ratece and Gozd Martuljek will be fully operating as of Saturday.
Last year Kranjska gora ski lift operators recorded EUR 3.3m in revenues, while this winter the company has already lost 60% of the income. The Kranjska gora ski lifts have operated 35 days this winter.
