Drnovsek Calls for Stricter Anti-Tobacco Provisions

Ljubljana, 19 January

President Janez Drnovsek addressed a letter on Friday to Prime Minister Janez Jansa and Health Minister Andrej Brucan calling for the government to go further with its proposed law aimed at banning smoking in public places.

According to a press release from the president's office, Drnovsek supports the government efforts to adopt a law banning smoking in public whose aim is to cut the harmful effects of smoking.
On the other hand, he agrees with a number of health organisations that the government should go further in banning smoking in cases where it poses a clear health risk.
He said that the NGO CINDI acquainted him with their proposals for further amendments, which were presented to the health minister on Thursday.
While endorsing the government's efforts, CINDI proposed that the number of its helpline to quit smoking be written on all tobacco products.
The organisation also proposed a ban on smoking in vehicles carrying minors, as well as in outdoor sport facilities and in the area surrounding educational and health institutions.
CINDI would also prohibit the sale of sweets, snacks, toys and other items that resemble the shape of tobacco products.
Drnovsek said he viewed the measures as useful in efforts to reduce smoking.
According to the president's office, Drnovsek praised the role of health organisations in raising awareness among young people about the need for a healthy lifestyle.
