January Unusually Warm in Slovenia

Ljubljana, 18 January

January has been unusually warm in Slovenia so far. The average temperature until Wednesday was 5.6 degrees Celsius, 7 degrees above the long-term average, according to data by the Agency for the Environment.

The weather watchers also measured the highest January temperature on record, just under 16 degrees, Tanja Cegnar of the Agency of the Environment said.
Even higher temperatures are expected for next two days, as the weather forecast for Friday and Saturday says temperatures will reach up to 16 centigrades in central Slovenia and up to 18 centigrades in southeastern part of the country.
The warm, dry period started in September and it does not look likely to end soon. This has been the warmest September-January period on record.
The warming effect is augmented by the absence of snow, which has a cooling effect on atmosphere, she said.
Some snowfall is expected at the beginning of next week, but it will be relegated to the mountainous areas.
