The cabinet confirmed on Thursday a measure with which it intends to speed up the construction of border checkpoints ahead of Slovenia's entry into the Schengen zone.
Under the changes to the act on the construction of border crossings procedures for obtaining land and building permits for border checkpoints will be intensified, the government said in a press release.
In line with the plan, the Ministry for Public Administration must complete the construction of 16 border checkpoints on the border with Croatia by the end of this year, government spokesperson Valentin Hajdinjak told the press.
According to the press release, efforts to speed up the construction of border crossings are needed in order to allow Slovenia to secure money from the Schengen fund, distributed by the EU to prospective Schengen zone members in a bid to fund the construction of Schengen-compatible infrastructure.
The government said that the legal mechanisms for the protection of land owners on future border checkpoints would not be reduced as a result of the law.
The document now needs to be confirmed in parliament.
The checkpoints will be built in line with the set standards on what will be the Schengen border once Slovenia enters the Schengen zone, expectedly at the end of the year.
