Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel labelled on Monday the victory of the hardline Radical Party (SRS) the general election in Serbia a Pyrrhic victory. The party cannot form a cabinet on its own, so conditions exist for a pro-European government, Rupel said at the sidelines of EU foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels.
According to preliminary results, the radicals won over 27% of the vote in Sunday's poll, followed by the Democratic Party (DS) of President Boris Tadic (22.59%) and the DSS-NS alliance of Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica (16.55%).
The results mean that numerous high EU representatives would go to Serbia to "advise their friends in Belgrade to compose a pro-European cabinet", Rupel said.
The results mean a "strengthening of pro-European forces in Serbia." According to Rupel, the view was also shared by other EU foreign ministers.
While Serbia has 90 days to set up a new cabinet, Rupel said Kostunica expected the process to take two months. "We expect to have government in Belgrade that we can cooperate with well in early spring," the minister said.
The EU called on Serbia today to quickly form a cabinet committed to the country's European prospects, which will be ready to face future challenges in the spirit of constructive cooperation with the international community.
