Exhibition of Contemporary Cuban Art Opened in Ljubljana
The exhibition "Waiting List: Time and Transition in Cuban Contemporary Art" opened at the City Gallery in Ljubljana on Monday evening. Works by more than 40 artists and groups highlight various tensions in political, cultural and social spaces of Cuba, the gallery director Aleksander Bassin told the press.
The exhibition brings works by artists who live in Cuba and those in exile, Bassin said. He added that the artists participating in the exhibition had had an important impact on the renaissance of Cuban art from the 80s onwards.
Featuring media ranging from photography, installation and video to painting and sculpture, the show focuses on the concept of time as the main theme in contemporary Cuban art.
Through personal experiences in the context of the revolution and emigration the artists portray free time, old age and decay, boredom, tension, the role of artist in society and the role of artist as observer or motor of change.
The curators, Elvis Funtes, Yuneikys Villalonga and Glexis Novoa, come from New York, Havana and Miami. According to Villalonga, the cooperation of curators from abroad was necessary to include the works by the artists who left Cuba in 1959 or later.
Villalonga also explained that the exhibition would not be able to visit Cuba in the form presented in Ljubljana, since the works of the artists living in exile have a strong political connotation.
The show closes on 15 January.
