Slovenian Sausage to Make First Appearance in Space
Carniola sausages, a Slovenian specialty, will make their premiere appearance in space. According to Wednesday's report in the Ohio-based News-Herald, the smoked delicacies belong to a care pack of Sunita Williams, an astronaut with Slovenian and Indian roots who is expected to depart shortly for the International Space Station.
Sunita, whose father is of Indian and mother of Slovenian origin, will take the special smoked sausage with her in a care package to be opened at Christmas. The sausages, made by Azman Meats from Euclid, Ohio, are hoped to be a surprise for the astronaut who will spend six months aboard the station.
According to the Ohio daily, the Euclid-born Sunita (41) earned her masters degree in engineering management from the Florida Institute of Technology. She has clocked in 2,770 hours of flights with 30 different planes while serving in the US Navy.
Sunita will be the third astronaut of Slovenian descent to fly to space after Ronald Sega and Jerry Linenger.
