Govt Adopts Changes to Decree on Higher Education Funding
The cabinet adopted on Thursday changes to the decree on public funding of higher education and other institutions. The changes increase the amount of funds for such institutions, Higher Education, Science and Technology Minister Jure Zupan told the press after the session.
The funds for higher education amounted to SIT 52bn (EUR 217m) in 2006. They will increase to SIT 56.7bn (EUR 236.6m) in 2007 and to SIT 61.2bn (EUR 255.4m) in 2008, the minister added.
The changes envisage that SIT 600,000 (EUR 2,500) would be paid for all regular students attending the second Bologna degree programmes.
They also introduce the possibility to finance new study programmes of the third Bologna degree from 2007-2008 onwards.
According to Zupan, the changes enable the minister to leave 4% of yearly budget funds undistributed and allocate them for development, mainly to promote quality and carry out priority projects.
Ljubljana University Chancellor Andreja Kocijancic said that the university would certainly get less money if the decree is adopted.
The decrease "depends on the percentage the minister will keep for the financing of new programmes", Kocijancic added.
