FISU Delegation Finds Maribor Good Candidate for Universiade
Slovenia has a rich sports tradition and the facilities, to organise the 2011 Winter Universiade, International University Sports Federation (FISU) Secretary General Roch Campana said on Tuesday as a FISU delegation inspected Maribor's bid to host the sports event.
The delegation was pleased by the fact that the scenes of the competitions would not be far apart.
Otmar Kugovnik, president of the Slovenian University Sports Association (SUSA), said that FISU representatives saw that Maribor could already organise the biggest students' sports event.
While some of the competitions could not be carried out in Maribor, they would take place in the city's immediate vicinity, Kugovnik added.
Maribor is moreover mulling the construction of new facilities by 2011 near the Pohorje ski resort and the city centre. The projects include enlargement of tourism facilities, a new gondola, 30 snow cannons, and ski jumps.
SUSA Secretary General Matjaz Pecovnik said that the new infrastructure, including transport, would cost EUR 200m by 2011. The organisation of the event would cost EUR 10m, with the money coming from European funds, national and city budgets and private sources.
Maribor is competing for the organisation of the 25th Universiade, which is to take place between 19 and 29 January 2011, with Turkey's Erzurum. FISU will reveal its decision on 16 January 2007 in Turin.
