President Awards Top Military Bras for Role in Independence War
President Janez Drnovsek conferred on Thursday high state decorations on military staff who were instrumental in Slovenia's independence war of 1991, including two former chiefs-of-staff, Ladislav Lipic and Iztok Podbregar.
Lipic received the Golden Order for Services for his extraordinary merits and personal engagement in Slovenia's independence, the development of the country's defence capabilities, the military's transformation into a professional force and Slovenia's integration in NATO.
Podbregar, a former head of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (SOVA), was honoured with the Golden Order for Services for the development of the country's defence capabilities, furthering the intelligence system and precluding trans-national threats in the framework of international security organisations.
Drnovsek said at the ceremony that Lipic as well as Podbregar had done important work. During their terms as chief-of-staff, the army made crucial steps forward, transforming into a modern organisation which can cooperate with the most advanced forces in the world, he said.
Other military staff who were decorated today include Andrej Jurjevic, who was awarded the Medal for Services, while Slavko Korenic, Milan Loparec, Stane Leskosek and Bojan Spor were decorated with the Order of Freedom.
The president also conferred decorations on several civilians that have contributed to Slovenia's development.
Stanko Curin received the Medal for Services for promoting Slovenian wines at home and abroad. The head of the Association of Slovenians in Hungary Joze Hirnoek received the Medal for Services for the development of Slovenian culture in Hungary.
Toshihiku Tsukamotu received the same order for promoting ties between Slovenia and Japan, while Branko Palcic was decorated for his deeds in Slovenia and for promoting Slovenia in Canada.
