Slovenian President Janez Drnovsek delves into the potential development of NATO in the latest posting on the website of his Movement for Justice and Development. He believes that NATO is not and must never be an "armed force of capital" which some have accused it of being, however, it can become a "common force of advanced humanity".
Deliberating on the future of NATO ahead of the alliance's summit in Riga next week, Drnovsek says that one option is that NATO become "a tool for the interests of capital" which would direct the armed force where it finds it useful.
However, according to him the more likely option is that it becomes "the armed force of the most developed countries, which will provide for their immediate security and act in the interest of all humankind."
This would indirectly improve the security of the member states, as "fairer circumstances in the world would reduce the possibility of terrorist acts and other attacks on the richest".
Moreover, NATO can play an important role in natural disasters, as it has invaluable transport and other capabilities, he says.
Drnovsek says his movement would strive towards making NATO a capability of a large number of countries to embark on concerted action in crisis circumstances, but it would "more than justifiably oppose" the other potential path of development.
Drnovsek was an advocate of NATO in the run-up to Slovenia's full-fledged membership in 2004, first as prime minister and later as president.
Since his personal transformation a year ago he has been advocating peace and harmony between people.
