Forensics started on Monday with exhumation works at a concealed post-WWII mass grave which was found a week ago during works on the construction site of a future motorway in Gorenjsko.
An investigating judge of the Kranj District Court decided that the exhumation will be carried out by court experts and forensics instead of archaeologists and anthropologists.
Pavel Jamnik, a criminal investigator and member of the government commission on concealed mass graves, expects that the exhumation will be as professional and precise as the previous ones were, since results and future investigation depend on that.
The forensic experts want to ascertain the number of victims, their age, the way they died, their nationality and social status. This can be determined from the items found next to the victims, said Jamnik, who is supervising the exhumation.
It is too early to try to guess who the victims were, however we got indications from interviews and inquiries, Jamnik said and added that there is currently not enough evidence to make any conclusions.
At the moment it is also impossible to make any predictions about the number of bodies in the grave. It is therefore difficult to say how long the exhumation will take. The remains of six people have been found so far.
