PM Jansa Makes Stop in Iraq During Visit to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait

Ljubljana, 15 November

Prime Minister Janez Jansa, accompanied by four ministers and a delegation of more than 60 executives, payed a five-day visit to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. He concluded the tour on Wednesday, 15 November, by making an unscheduled stopover in Iraq to visit four Slovenian army instructors who are training Iraqi security forces in a base near Baghdad

He also held meetings with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and Foreign Minister Hoshyar Mahmud Zebari. Jansa said that he and his hosts agreed that Iraqi security forces needed to be trained as soon as possible so that they would be capable of providing security in Iraq on their own.
During his visit to Riyadh - the first Slovenian visit Saudi Arabia at such level - Jansa also met Saudi King Abdallah bin Abd al-Aziz Al Saud, who assured that Saudi Arabia would cooperate with the EU on issues of energy security and inter-cultural dialogue during Slovenia's stint as EU chair.
In Kuwait the PM among others met the Emir of Kuwait, Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jabir al-Sabah, with whom he discussed cooperation between the EU and the Gulf Cooperation Council and the situation in the Middle East, especially in Iraq.
Meanwhile, Slovenian Defence Minister Karl Erjavec announced in Kuwait on Tuesday, 14 November that Slovenia is expected to take part in the purchase of three or four C-17 military transport aircraft together with 14 NATO members.
