Idrija Bobbin Lacemaking school Celebrates 130 Years
The bobbin lacemaking school in Idrija will mark its 130th anniversary on Friday with a conference featuring most recent findings on the traditional Idrija lace.
The event at Gewerkenegg Castle at the heart of Slovenia's lacemaking land will also include presentations of traditional lacemaking that was first documented in the town of Idrija in 1696, according to the Idrija Museum.
The lacemaking school was established in 1876, on the initiative of Ivanka Ferjancic, whose great love and talent for lacemaking led the then authorities to open the school that has been operating continuously since then.
Nowadays, some 470 pre-school and primary school children attend extra-curricular lacemaking classes which also include patterns drawing, history of lacemaking and the use of the fragile ornaments.
The interest into this venerable activity has been growing strong in Slovenia and abroad with several students from Europa and both Americas also attending the classes.
The western Slovenian town of Idrija is also the stage of the annual lacemaking festival that takes place in the summer.
