Plaque Marks Place of Key Decisions in Independence Struggle

Brdo pri Kranju, 25 October

A memorial plaque was unveiled at the Jezero Cottage in Brdo pri Kranju on Wednesday, marking the place where numerous key decisions in Slovenia's struggle for independence were made. "Many important things happened here that the public does not know about," Prime Minister Janez Jansa said as he inaugurated the plaque.

From April to June 1991, the cottage was the situation room for government-appointed working groups that dealt with concrete aspects of independence, in particular economic decisions.
These meetings and decisions made sure that the country had everything when it won independence, that people did not raid shops or flee the country, said Jansa, who was defence minister at that time.
What also makes Brdo crucial for independence was that it housed a weapons depot, that the battalion of Territorial Defence which protected Brnik Airport was formed there and that a number of crucial decisions on the rejuvenation of the Territorial Defence had been taken, Jansa said.
The unveiling of the plaque is a part of celebrations to mark the 15th anniversary of Slovenian independence. The ceremony was attended by a number of cabinet ministers as well as the key players and decision-makers in the independence struggle.
