The week's top event, the local elections, saw the spotlight being taken by former CEO of retailer Mercator, Zoran Jankovic, who became the new Mayor of Ljubljana after taking more than 63% of the vote in the capital. Other major news included Slovenia stepping up its endeavours for the accession to to Schengen zone. Facing an ever more certain delay in the expansion of the Schengen zone due to problems in setting up the new Schengen information system SIS II, Slovenian Interior Minister Dragutin Mate has hinted that despite a possible support by EU members to a solution proposed by Portugal (SIS I plus), Slovenia's accession to the zone might not come in October 2007 as initially planed.
