Health Sector to Get Uniform Information System

Ljubljana, 23 October

The e-zdravje (e-health) project will link all Slovenian hospitals in a uniform information system by the end of 2007, Health Minister Andrej Brucan told the press in Ljubljana on Monday. The objective does not end there, as the ministry plans to create a unified national information system by 2013, Brucan added.

The EUR 66m project, included in the resolution on the national development projects between 2007 and 2023, should by the end of 2013 also see a national health portal and a system of data exchange, he added.
The project aims at securing an efficient, flexible and modern health information system, cutting the costs and increasing the efficiency of administration, he added.
The new system will also mean better and more accessible health services for patients and facilitate access to information by health workers, he explained.
Indeed, one of the problems facing the current health system, according to Brucan, is the existence of incompatible localised information systems.
A further issue lies in differing equipment in individual institutions, diverse web sites and the lack of a joint access point.
The ministry has already disbursed SIT 500m (EUR 2.09m) for investments into information systems alongside SIT 82m (EUR 343,000) for servers.
The project will be financed through EU funds with EUR 27m, public-private partnerships will contribute EUR 21m, while the remaining EUR 18m will be allocated from the budget.
