Slovenia, China Sign Action Plan in Health

Ljubljana, 19 October

Slovenian Health Minister Andrej Brucan and Li Xin, China's deputy health minister, have signed an action plan on cooperation between the two ministries in the area of health and medicine for the 2006-2007 period.

The purpose of the plan, signed on Thursday, is to broaden the cooperation between the two ministries in the fields of blood safety and transfusion medicine, acupuncture and in researching the impact of the environment on people's health, Brucan said after the signing.
The plan also envisages facilitating cooperation between experts of both countries in the area of health and medicine, exchange of experience and implementation of joint projects, he explained.
Li meanwhile said that China wants to get to know Slovenia's health care system in more detail. He stressed that the projects set down in the agreement needs to be carried out and expressed his hope that cooperation between the two countries would help improve health standards in both countries.
Brucan stated his pleasure over the fact that the Chinese government enabled several Slovenian doctors to improve their knowledge in acupuncture and supported the expansion and development of the bone marrow transplant programme.
Brucan furthermore explained that the countries face similar problems in reforming the health system, namely how to ensure its more efficient functioning for the benefits of the patients as well as improve the management and finances of health institutions.
