Planica to Get EUR 100m Nordic Centre

Planica, 18 October

Planica, one of the most famous ski jumping venues in the world, is to get a nordic centre worth EUR 100m in accordance with the government's plans for the period until 2023. The centre is scheduled for completion in 2013, according to Education and Sport Minister Milan Zver.

The package includes an upgrade of the existing ski-jump hills, the construction of a cross-country stadium, a football stadium, as well as bike and hike paths.
Some EUR 15m would be allocated from the national budget, EUR 40m from EU funds and the rest from private sources, Zver told the press in Planica on Wednesday.
The centre would initially be managed by the government through a joint-stock company whose other shareholders would include the owners of the building land.
"We wish to achieve general consensus with the owners and future partners and plan environmental impacts so that the valley remains the pearl below Mount Triglav," he said.
The head of the ministry's directorate for sport, Simon Starcek, meanwhile pointed out that EU funds for the project are readily available.
