Exhibition "Slovenians in London 1991-1994"

London, 10 October

The exhibition "Slovenians in London 1991-1994" opened at the Slovenian embassy in London on Tuesday, presenting individuals in the time of the struggle for Slovenia's independence and their activities in response to the war in Slovenia, the embassy said.

After the attack by the Yugoslav People's Army on Slovenia in 1991, a Slovenian civil initiative was established in London, which acted through the Slovenian Crisis Centre action group and by publishing the Slovenian Newsletter.
The initiative organised various activities: from informing the media, writing petitions and lobbying in the parliament, to organising cultural events.
The exhibition, subtitled "Grass-roots Activities for Slovenian Independence", includes various materials: photos, documents, paper clippings, banners from the protest on Trafalgar square on 7 July 1991, T-shirts and badges saying "Free Slovenia Now".
One of the centrepieces is a Slovenian flag, hand-made by the Hartley family in the beginning of July 1991.
The exhibition, designed by Jana Valencic and Miha Dobrin, was first put on in December 1994 in Ljubljana. It was revived in June 2006 to mark the 15th anniversary of Slovenian independence.
