Ljubljana, 03 October

An exhibition entitled "The Allure of the Matrix, the Woodcut in Slovenia in the 20th Century" opened on Thursday, 5 October, in the International Centre of Graphic Arts (MGLC). The exhibition highlights woodcut and linocut art in Slovenia between the years 1911 and 2006 with the emphasis on the period after 1950.

The exhibition is to offer an answer to the question why did artists use archaic, old-fashioned and technologically demanding printing process to express their ideas and messages in the period that praised the progress and technology, the organising MGLC gallery said on Tuesday.
The exhibition features works by 40 artists of all generations, including Slovenia's heavyweights such as Avgust Cernigoj and Bozidar Jakac.
It is accompanied by a catalogue devoted to the development of the woodcut in Slovenia by the exhibition's author Breda Skrjanec.
MGLC is also preparing many accompanying events, including a coloured woodcut workshop, demonstrations of coloured woodcuts creation and a drawing and graphics course, led by an Macedonian academic painter and illustrator Boge Dimovski.
The exhibition will be open until 3 December.
