A new Faculty of Applied Social Sciences will open in Nova Gorica next year in line with a memorandum of understanding signed on Tuesday by the city, the Higher Education and Research Centre of Primorsko and the gaming company Hit.
Enrollment is to start next year for the undergraduate programme of applied social studies and the graduate programme inter-cultural management, which have already been confirmed by the national certification authority, the Higher Education Council.
According to the dean, Borut Roncevic, the faculty expects up to 100 students in the first academic year. Lectures will be held in provisional classrooms provided by the local community until a campus is built in nearby Solkan by 2010.
The initial programmes will be complemented by applied IT, a business programme, regional studies and, in conjunction with the University of Sigmund Freud from Vienna, psychotherapy.
Roncevic and the dean of the Sigmund Freud University, Alfred Pritz, signed an agreement on cooperation with the Union of Slovenian Psychotherapy Associations.
Prime Minister Janez Jansa also attended the signing. He said this was a strategic step crucial for the entire region.
The establishment of the University of Primorsko marked the start of polycentric development in which the state is open to private and public-private initiatives, which create greater autonomy, competition and quality in education, he said.
