Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel has taken part in a meeting of EU foreign ministers with their Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov which focused on relations between the EU and Russia as well as on international topics.
The talks between the foreign ministers of the bloc and Lavrov, which took place on the sidelines of the plenary session of the 61st UN General Assembly in New York on Friday, also examined the situation in the Middle East and Sudan as well as the nuclear standoff with Iran.
Rupel took part in a ministerial breakfast of the Group of Friends of the Alliance of Civilisations, while he also held separate meetings with Bulgarian counterpart Ivajlo Kalfin and Indonesian opposite number Hassan Wirajuda.
Discussions with the Bulgarian FM focused on ways to strengthen economic cooperation between the countries. Kalfin expressed an interest of Bulgarian businesses to work with Luka Koper, the operator of Slovenia's lone sea port.
Meanwhile, Rupel assured Kalfin of Slovenia continued support of Bulgaria's efforts to join the EU and invited his country to join the Slovenian-run Centre for the European Perspective, where it could provide assistance to new EU aspirants in the region.
Rupel and Wirajuda assessed that political ties between the countries were good, while they also agreed that cooperation needed to be strengthened through greater collaboration in the economy. As part of efforts to strengthen cooperation, Wirajuda announced that Indonesia would soon open its embassy in Slovenia.
Moreover, the pair also examined dialogue among civilisations, with Rupel taking the opportunity to invite Indonesia to make a contribution to the Centre for a European Perspective in this regard.
