The parliamentary committees for the economy, EU affairs and labour voiced satisfaction with the progress Slovenia has made in implementing reforms for the Lisbon Strategy at Thursday's joint session.
The committees unanimously assessed that the government enabled harmonised implementation of the adopted programme of reforms with establishing the government Development Office as they discussed a draft report on the reforms.
They also assessed that the cooperation between the parliament, government and Institute for Macroeconomic Analysis and Development (IMAD) in implementing the strategy was good, while the government should keep the committees up-to-date on the implementation of the strategy.
IMAD's director Janez Sustersic, who is also Slovenia's Lisbon Strategy coordinator, presented Slovenia's progress in five key areas: faster economic growth and increasing of the competitiveness of Slovenia's economy, effective transfer of the knowledge to the business, effective and competitive state, a contemporary welfare state and the combining of all these measures for sustainable development with special attention to environment protection.
Sustersic stressed that Slovenia has advanced considerably in cutting red tape faced by enterprises as well as in attracting foreign investment and promoting innovation.
However, Sustersic also stressed that this year Slovenia will spend 0.75% of GDP for research and development, which is much less than the planned 1%, which is why it will have to increase spending for this purpose at a faster pace.
He also pointed out that on 1 July 2007 the electricity market for households will open and the government has prepared a programme which will enable easier access for new players.
The report discussed by the committee today deals with Slovenia's implementation of the Reform Programme for the Implementation of the Lisbon Strategy in Slovenia that was adopted by the cabinet last October.
The three-year programme, which all EU member states had to submit to the European Commission, is based on the government's package of structural reforms.
