Drnovsek Believes in Kriznar's Near Release

President Janez Drnovsek expects that his special envoy to Sudan's region of Darfur, Tomo Kriznar, will be released from prison soon. "According to official and unofficial information we've got, Kriznar's case is going on well," Drnovsek said on Monday.

"We expect his release in the following days, therefore my visit to Sudan will not be necessary," Drnovsek said on the margin of a press conference with the Azeri president.
The president added that he will keep following the situation in Sudan and do the best he can for the humanitarian situation in Darfur to improve.
As to the government's reproaches that his actions in Sudan were unsynchronised and badly prepared, he said that missions aimed at helping people can hardly be called redundant or solo.
"It became clear that the international community is extremely unsuccessfull in Sudan and Darfur. So we wanted to help and we did everything in our power, being only human," Drnovsek said.
Slovenian Consul in Egypt Andrej Dernovscek ended his visit and talks in Al Fasher, where he also saw Kriznar in prison, because his permit has expired. He is returning to Khartum, where he will continue with the efforts to save Kriznar, the Foreign Ministry said in a press release.
Kriznar was sentenced to two years in prison in Sudan's city of Al Fasher on 14 August. He was charged by the court of first instance with entering Sudan illegally, spying and spreading lies about the Sudanese government and people.
