Ljubljana, 28 August

Minister of Labour, Family and Social Affairs Janez Drobnic presented the press on Monday a series of 14 debates on the social inclusion of people who are hard to employ, stressing that rather favourable conditions in Slovenia are also a result of financial aid of the European Social Fund.

According to Drobnic, the European 2004-2006 programme defines the plan of activities in this field, with its three main tasks being the support for the production sector and competitiveness, the development of knowledge and human resources, as well as employment and restructuring of agriculture.
In the last two years, the ministry earmarked around SIT 24bn (EUR 99.78m) for the development of knowledge and human resources, ensuring one third of the aid from the budget, while the rest came from the European Social Fund.
The main goal is to increase the number of jobs, decrease unemployment, support social inclusion of people with special needs, and raise the education level of the employed, for businesses to become competitive on the global market, the minister said.
Thus, the ministry intends to develop and strengthen active policies on the labour market, prevent social exclusion, and make sure that businesses react better to the demands of globalisation, he added.
Furthermore, informing the public on the programmes co-financed by the EU is also of great importance. For this purpose, the ministry will hold the first of the planned 14 public panels on this topic which will take place around Slovenia, Drobnic also said.
