Slovenia Mulling Sending 10-20 Soldiers to Lebanon

Ljubljana, 25 August

Slovenia is thinking about sending between 10 and 20 soldiers to the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel told his counterparts at Friday's extraordinary meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

"Although the figure does not seem high, it is proportionate to Slovenia's size and the capacity of its military, which is already active in numerous peacekeeping missions around the world," Rupel was quoted as saying by the Foreign Ministry.
Slovenia could also offer Lebanon assistance through the activities of the Ljubljana-based International Trust Fund for Demining and Mine Victims Assistance (ITF), which is experienced in mine clearance, the ministry said in a press release.
The foreign ministers convened today to determine the EU's contribution to the UNIFIL. The UN would like an immediate contribution of at least 3,500 soldiers to join the 2,000 UNIFIL members already in Lebanon.
