Second Rotation of Slovenian Instructors Arrives in Iraq
The second rotation of four Slovenian military instructors arrived in Baghdad last week, the Defence Ministry said on Monday. They are based in the al-Rustamiya training centre and have been taking over their duties in the past few days.
The instructors will train Iraqi security forces under a NATO-led mission. The first rotation of four instructors that had been in Iraq from the end of February has already returned to Slovenia, the ministry added.
Sending the second group of soldiers to Iraq drew flak from the opposition parties. The Liberal Democracy (LDS) and Social Democrats (SD) have repeated their calls on the parliamentary defence committee to call on the government to reverse its decision on sending the soldiers.
The government decided on 12 January to send the soldiers to Baghdad, explaining that the mission is part of the country's obligations towards NATO. NATO decided to participate in the training of Iraqi forces but not in military operations.
