The 10th annual Days of Wine an Poetry festival is to open on 23 August in Medana, a small village in the hilly wine-growing region of Goriska Brda in western Slovenia. The theme of this year's event will be avantgarde and poetry.
Readings at the birthplace of Slovenian poet Alojz Gradnik remain the centrepiece of the four-day event. This year 24 poets from 18 countries will recite their poetry there, festival manager Jelka Ciglenecki said on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Medana before Medana will take poetry to several other Slovenian towns. Readings will take place on 22 August in Ljubljana, Novo mesto, Maribor, Ptuj, Izola, Velika Polana and at the Skrabec Homestead in Hrovaca.
Beside the poetry and wine, the festival will also offer a number of concerts, theatre and dance performances, exhibitions, films and round tables.
At the closing event on 26 August the main sponsor, mobile operator Simobil, will give out awards for best SMS poems in a special competition.
Like in the previous years, the poems from the festival will be published in an anthology in their original language as well as English and Slovenian translations.
