Slovenia has urged the international community to act with greater resolution towards providing general access to preventive AIDS programmes, treatment, care and assistance by 2010. The appeal comes in a statement Slovenia issued as the chair of the Human Security Network at the 16th International AIDS Conference.
According to the statement, which was issued on Thursday, the members of the Human Security Network have undertaken to tackle the increasing number of AIDS and HIV cases among the youth.
Slovenia moreover calls for greater efforts to guarantee all human rights and fundamental liberties to people with AIDS, including the right to education, inheritance, employment, health care and social benefits.
In this context it is necessary to respect privacy and develop strategies to combat stigmatisation and social exclusion, reads the statement which has been circulated by the Foreign Ministry.
It is crucial that governments, UN agencies, regional, international and non-governmental organisations which provide assistance in regions affected by conflicts or natural disasters, make preventing and treating HIV and AIDS infections a part of their programmes
The members of the Human Security Network have also made the commitment to find appropriate solutions to overcome hurdles in prices, tariffs and trade agreements as a means of improving the accessibility of high-quality drugs, the statement also reads.
The International AIDS Conference, organised by the International AIDS Society, is taking place in Toronto, Canada, between 13 and 18 August.
