New Slovenian Soldiers Going to Afghanistan and Iraq
A ceremony took place at the barracks in Celje on Friday ahead of the departure on Monday of the sixth contingent of the Slovenian army to a six-month mission in Afghanistan.
Most of the 54 soldiers joining the NATO-led ISAF peace force will be based in Herat in the more peaceful, western part of Afghanistan, while two soldiers will join ISAF command in Kabul.
They are expected to take over their duties in Afghanistan a week after leaving Slovenia, which is when the soldiers who have been in Afghanistan since February are expected to return.
Five of the soldiers based in Herat will help to train the Afghan army while the motorised detachment will protect the base in Herat as Slovenian soldiers have hitherto done in the region.
The Slovenian soldiers man the check-points, patrol the vicinity of the city and accompany vehicles circulating around Herat. They will be based in the Arena military base near Herat together with Italian and Spanish forces.
The replacement of the four Slovenian military instructors who are training security forces in Iraq is also expected in the coming days.
