Slovenia to Take Part in UN Meeting on Lebanon

Ljubljana, 02 August

Slovenia has been invited to a special United Nations meeting of countries that are willing to contribute troops for a possible peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, the Foreign Ministry confirmed on Wednesday.

The meeting, which has been called by the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan was informal and chaired by Deputy Secretary General Jean Marie Guehenno. Slovenia was represented by its permanent mission to the UN.
The move comes after EU foreign ministers reached an agreement on an international mission in the south of Lebanon, in which European countries would contribute their representatives.
Moreover, Prime Minister Janez Jansa said on Monday that Slovenia was willing to take part in "all peace initiatives and activities of the UN and other international organisations, provided that the decisions are taken in accordance with prescribed procedures."
