Vera Zvonareva of Russia has prevented Slovenia's no. 1 tennis player Katarina Srebotnik from taking her fifth WTA tour crown with a commanding straight sets victory, 6:2 and 6:4, in the final of the Cincinnati Open.
Sunday's final matchup in Cincinnati was a surprise as Zvonareva and Srebotnik both beat more fancied opponents in their semi-finals.
The 21-year-old Russian, who is ranked 37th in the world, looked the better player throughout the final, beating the 21st player in the world in a little under an hour.
"She's been playing unbelievably since Birmingham...but I won the most games in one set from her this week, 6-4, so I'm happy about that. We play in the first round next week in Stanford, so I hope to get revenge then," said Srebotnik.
With the loss the Slovenian fell to 4-4 in finals matches at WTA tournaments. However, her run to the finals has pushed her five places higher on the latest WTA rankings to a career-best 21st.
