The 47th International Mathematical Olympiad, which ended on Monday in Ljubljana, was very successful for Slovenians, who have won one silver and three bronze medals, said Josef Pelikan of the event's advisory committee.
Pelikan, the committee's chairman, added that the Chinese were the overall best nation at the event, taking six gold medals, followed by South Korea with four and Iran with three.
Slovenia meanwhile reached the highest number of points (90 out of the 252 total) at the event which included 498 secondary school students from 90 countries.
At the closing ceremony 42 golden, 89 silver and 122 bronze medals were awarded, with Janez Potočnik, the European Commissioner for Science and Research, delivering the key-note address.
Potočnik said in his speech that many young mathematicians will in the future decide to study mathematics, stressing that mathematics fosters logical and analytical thinking.
The Olympiad, which is held in a different country every year, is the most prestigious international competition in mathematics.
