Slovenian humanitarian organisation concluded on Thursday the main phase of their World for Darfur fund-raiser, which saw more than SIT 200m (EUR 834,585) collected for aid to a refugee camp in the west of this Sudanese region.
President Drnovsek, the initiator of Slovenia's assistance to Darfur, told the press on Thursday that the World for Darfur project is a success as more funds have been raised than anticipated.
While stressing that the initiative would continue because people in the region still need help, Drnovsek also noted that Slovenian help for the refugees came at a time when assistance was extremely urgent and when other humanitarian organisation were beginning to run out of breath.
Drnovsek moreover highlighted that the project also contributed to raising the awareness of Slovenians about the world around them and expressed gratitude for everyone that chipped in and his expectation that Slovenians will also respond to such initiatives in the future.
The project, which began on 1 February and which already saw more than SIT 150m (EUR 625,939) used to help the over 10,000 refugees of the Hamidia camp, was organised by the Slovenian Red Cross, Unicef Slovenia, Karitas and Ustanova skupaj (The Together Institute).
