Slovenia Establishes Diplomatic Relations with Montenegro
Slovenia established diplomatic relations with Montenegro on Wednesday, a day after the National Assembly recognised the newly-independent country.
Diplomatic relations were established with an exchange of notes between Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel and his Montenegrin counterpart Miodrag Vlahovic, the Foreign Ministry said.
The exchange of notes came after Rupel notified Vlahovic of the parliament's decision to recognise Montenegrin independence.
Meanwhile, the government decided at a correspondence session to upgrade the consulate general in Podgorica into a full-fledged embassy.
The motion was sent to President Janez Drnovsek, who has to issue the relevant decree according to law.
Slovenia opened a consulate in Podgorica in 2001 after it established diplomatic relations with the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in December 2000.
