Representatives of 13 municipalities that lie on the shores of the Northern Adriatic have signed an Alliance for the Northern Adriatic, a charter binding them to push for environment-friendly policies in the region.
The signatories, which came together on Tuesday in the Slovenian coastal town of Piran upon the initiative of Mayor of Piran Vojkar Stular, will take action to prevent the pollution of the coastal and see habitat.
They also intend to raise awareness about environmental risks, encourage the development of renewable sources of energy and strengthen the cooperation of Croatia, Italy, Slovenia in environmental issues.
Such meeting of mayors from the region will take place each year on 20 June, with the next meeting being hosted by Italy's San Dorligo della Valle, and Muggia.
"We want to prevent a repetition of the scenario where we find out about a project like the gas terminal in the middle of the Gulf of Trieste from the media," Stular said, adding that all the municipalities present today were united in opposing the construction of the mentioned terminal.
