A 20,000-strong crowd of Depeche Mode fans went into raptures on Wednesday evening, as the legendary British band made a stopover in Slovenia for the first time in their 26-year history during the world tour "Touring the Angel".
After the supporting act, British rock band Placebo, warmed up the audience at the Ljubljana Bezigrad Stadium, Depeche Mode played a few of their older hits, including "Pain", "Walking", "Stripped", "I feel you", "Personal Jesus" and "Enjoy the Silence".
From their new album, "Playing the Angel", they performed their latest success "Precious", and later on "John the Revelator". They concluded the concert with "Shake", "Photographic" and "Never Let Me Down".
According to many, Depeche Mode is one of the most significant and influential groups of the 1980s, yet it is also reaching beyond "the 80s". In their 26-year history, they have had a series of hit singles, enthusing their fans and inspiring other musicians.
The band won its status of an international pop music icon with its innovative sound experiments and sampling, thus influencing numerous producers of electro, techno and house music.
Their lyrics, mostly based on the band's personal experiences, have dealt with issues including the environment and personal alienation, but their most frequent themes are love, desire and religion, often combined.
The band, whose music is labelled as alternative despite its massive popularity, was founded in 1980, when Vincent Clark (who left the band after the first album), Martin Gore and Andy Fletcher were joined by the singer David Gahan.
