Govt Drafts Changes to National Border Control Act
Print this page
Ljubljana, 14 June

The government on Wednesday drafted amendments to the national border control act, which, according to Interior Minister Dragutin Mate, establishes an appropriate legal basis for preventing illegal border crossings.

Speaking to the press after the government's session, Mate said that the amendments set down the property ownership rights and envisage an establishment of a body to draft a list of border crossing points which are to be shut down.
The amendments also provide the legal basis for the erection of barriers on certain roads as a means of preventing illegal border crossing.
Slovenia and Croatia have already reached agreement on 96 border crossing points; 30 still need to be discussed, while 40 will be supervised by Slovenian border patrols, Mate added.
As Mate further explained, a failure to fulfill these tasks in line with the Schengen standards on the EU's external border could prevent Slovenia's entry into the Schengen zone.
