Govt Drafts EUR 710m Army Development Plan

Ljubljana, 14 June

The cabinet drafted Wednesday a SIT 170bn (EUR 710m) bill on the implementation of the 2008-2015 development programmes of the Slovenian Armed Forces, Defence Minister Karl Erjavec told the press after the cabinet's session.

In opposition to its 1994 predecessor, the bill abolishes loan-based financing of the armed forces, and sets that the necessary funds will be allocated from the budget.
The bill is expected to bring Slovenian military capabilities in line with NATO demands, said the Government PR and Media Office.
The army's most important projects in the period include the armoured personnel carriers 8x8, communication and electronic equipment, airplanes - including a transport aircraft - anti-armour and air defence rocket systems.
The bill also retains the system of counter supplies as well as defines a special procedure to draft, confirm and conclude contracts, the office added.
Minister Erjavec also commented on the announcement by Sistemska tehnika, a Slovenian defence technology firm which was outbid in a non-public tender for the supply of 8x8 armoured personnel vehicles, that it would demand an audit of the procedure at the Defence Ministry.
Stressing that the selected supplier (Rotis) placed a better bid according to all criteria, he added that the ministry has every right to anull and renew the tender procedure.
