Govt Allocates Another EUR 100,000 for Training Iraqi Soldiers
The government decided to pay another SIT 24m (EUR 100,000) into the NATO fund for training Iraqi security forces, doubling the amount it has already paid in February and March.
The funds will go for training, transportation and food for Iraqi recruits outside of Iraq. The NATO fund was set up at the end of June 2004 at the alliance's summit in Istanbul, he added, explaining that the cabinet's move comes in response to a recent request for more funds by NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.
The government has also sent military equipment to Iraq earlier in the year, while four Slovenian military instructors continue to train Iraqi soldiers in the country.
The government moreover decided to send one military officer to the soon-to-be established NATO liaison office in Belgrade.
The office, to be set up on 1 September, will mainly monitor the implementation of the agreement on transit between NATO and Serbia-Montenegro.
The government also authorised Defence Minister Karl Erjavec to sign a defence cooperation agreement between the governments of Slovenia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. It moreover sent the proposal on signing this agreement to parliament.
