Government Urges Parliament to Recognise Montenegro ASAP

The government has urged the parliament to recognise Montenegro as an independent state. According to the proposal, which the government adopted on Thursday, Slovenia should recognise Montenegro as soon as possible after a relevant decision is taken by a relevant EU body.

The EU General Affairs and External Relations Council is expected to give the green light for the recognition of Montenegro next week, Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel said. Should any "heated debate" arise at the meeting of EU foreign ministers, Slovenia will insist that Montenegro has met all conditions set by the EU, and has earned international recognition with the recent independence referendum, stressed Rupel.
The parliament's foreign policy committee endorsed the motion in order to make Slovenia one of the first EU member states to recognise Montenegro. Slovenia would also immediately open an embassy. The parliament will vote on the recognition at the session which starts on 19 June.
