Foreign Ministry Sends Congratulations to Montenegro

Ljubljana, 04 June

The Slovenian Foreign Ministry on Sunday congratulated the Montenegrin authorities upon Saturday's declaration of Montenegrin independence.

The ministry said it expects independent Montenegro to resolve open issues with Serbia in a frank dialogue as soon as possible, as this is important for stability of the region and its European prospects.
The government will send to parliament a decision on the recognition of Montenegro's independence, said the ministry, and added that it will continue to coordinate its activity with the EU.
The ministry also said it is willing to continue to provide Montenegro assistance in its efforts to join the international community as well as the EU and NATO.
The parliament declared Montenegrin independence on Saturday after the majority of Montenegro citizens voted for independence in the 21 May referendum. Montenegro thus became an independent state after nearly 90 years.
