Slovenia began its one year stint as president of the Human Security Network (HSN) on Friday, as the network's two-day ministerial meeting came to a close in Bangkok, the capital city of the HSN's previous chair, Thailand.
Slovenia's priority tasks were outlined by FM Dimitrij Rupel, who pointed out the role the HSN will play in the newly-established UN Human Rights Council, facilitation of cultural dialogue and protection of children in armed conflicts.
Setting up the Council is a historical event that will strengthen UN mechanisms in the area of human rights, Rupel said, adding that HSN members should start a discussion on the role and possible initiatives of the HSN in the Council.
He therefore called on HSN participating countries to present a joint statement at the Council's first meeting in Geneva in June as well as called on them to make sure that the Council becomes an effective body.
Another of Slovenia's priority tasks is promoting cultural dialogue through education on human rights and drafting the HSN's joint position on violence against children and another on children in armed conflicts.
Slovenia will also continue with the initiatives about fighting AIDS which were given by Thailand, Rupel revealed, pointing out that in his opinion special funds should be put forward to implement an action plan to fight the disease.
Slovenia will moreover continue with activities in the area of anti-personnel landmines prohibition and small arms. He believes that the HSN should continue to support activities to clear minefields.
Slovenia's stint as HSN president will moreover see the country continue with the network activities in the areas of women in peacekeeping operations, human trafficking and prevention of poverty.
